10 Thoughts on “Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time [1632p]”

    Hello,

Thank you for all the work you’ve done encoding Evangelion, I am forever grateful since I love this anime.

I am wondering how to make sure this (and your 1632p 3.333 release) plays back with the correct colour space in Windows 10, I am using mpv for playback.

If I understand correctly the encode is SDR, but with the BT.2020 color space, does that mean I should play it back with W10 set to output SDR but force my TV to BT.2020 colour space (instead of the default BT.709), or should I set W10 to output HDR (where the TV automatically switches to the BT.2020 space) and then play the file?

    Thanks in advance for reading,
    Ben

Hello. The TV should display SDR content with a 2020 matrix and not enable HDR mode. But if it can’t, don’t worry and switch it to HDR mode. The image should still look correct.

Awesomely swift reply mate, the issue is I think the TV goes by what W10 is outputting, ie REC.709, I know mpv is supposed to read the EDID of the display and output the right flags for the TV to switch to the right space but I’ve also read that mpv converts everything to sRGB so I’m a bit confused since Windows is definitely outputting REC.709 as the Auto setting on my TV looks identical to the REC.709 setting.

Seemingly the only difference in the image when I start your file in mpv while Win10 is outputting SDR vs. HDR is that with SDR ouput nothing changes when I engage fullscreen, whereas with HDR output the blacks are crushed until I engage fullscreen at which point the TV changes something (Seems like HDMI level changing) and the image is correct again without crushing/normal contrast.

Other than that the colour looks the same after fullscreen is engaged, it doesn’t look too dull or too saturated. When I force BT.2020 in my TVs settings then it looks a bit over the top.

Is there anywhere I can see screenshots of this (and the 816p release if thats any difference in terms of colour space)? Then I can just compare my output to those and call it a day.

I’m probably stressing over nothing, I think mpv does everything automatically + its a master series Sony TV so they generally interpret things corrrectly on Auto settings.

        Thanks,
        Ben

I just noticed my TVs settings say “sRGB/REC.709”, I didn’t even realise that was the same thing, I guess that means since mpv is converting the BT.2020 to sRGB I don’t need to manually change anything and its all working fine.

One last question I have is do you think there is any benefit to finding a way to have mpv output the BT.2020 without conversion? Will that actually result in better quality of output or is it just snake oil?

My TV covers 93% of the DCI-P3, but only 72% of BT.2020 space, hence why I’m reticent to go through the effort of messing with things that much.

          Thanks,
          Ben

No, it’s not nonsense. More colors means a better result. The correct work of 2020 will give excellent results. You can see examples of how it works, for example here:

The color difference between 709 and 2020 in this film is that 2020 has a broader coverage of red and orange, as well as other colors at the DCI P3 level. It’s not something that can be quickly distinguished from each other. Therefore, I think that everything is working correctly for you. In any case, you can compare the two versions in the opening credits scene, where there is a lot of red while the characters are walking in the frame to the music. In the 2020 version, the red color should look more saturated, almost ruby in hue. You can find reviews and version comparisons on Google, I haven’t done them. I also don’t know the nuances of mpv operation, so I can’t answer you.

Thanks, I’m downloading the 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 816p versions now to compare to the 3.333 version and 3.0+1.0 1632p version I have just now.

One last thing, anywhere I can donate you money for all this work? I’m in the UK and it can be tricky to send money to Russia, you said on nyaa comments your members are also in Ukraine?

Let me know how I can compensate you for this work please.
